The meadow has not been ploughed in living memory and has many types of naturally established wild plants. There are reputedly only 2% of such meadows left in Leicestershire. To preserve it no fertilizers are used nor pesticides. It is rich in wild life, insects and butterflies.

The meadow is not grazed in the early part of each year and a crop of hay is taken off at the end of July when the seeds have had a chance to drop.
